What to include in a netball sponsorship agreement

The eight clauses every grassroots netball sponsorship agreement needs, and the season-specific detail (dress versus skort, September to spring, junior sections) a generic template misses.

A netball sponsorship agreement is what turns a friendly conversation with a local business into a partnership the club relies on for the season. This guide covers what every grassroots netball sponsorship agreement needs in writing: the eight clauses protecting both sides, the deliverables the club owes across the season, and the specifics of netball making a template different from other sports.

A club approaching its first sponsor sometimes treats the agreement as a formality. It works better when agreed before the money changes hands: settle the eight clauses below first, then let the sponsorship start on terms both sides have already seen in writing.

Why a written netball sponsorship agreement matters

A verbal yes from a business feels like the hard part is over, until the season starts and nobody remembers exactly what was agreed. A written agreement fixes the terms before the first match, so a change of committee, a change of contact at the sponsor's business, or a simple lapse of memory does not put the arrangement at risk.

This guide is offered as general guidance rather than  legal advice. Where the sponsorship value is significant, have the agreement checked by someone with the relevant expertise before either side signs.

The eight clauses every netball sponsorship agreement needs

1. Parties and dates

Netball clubs typically run under a single committee covering seniors, juniors and Bee Netball sessions together, so name the specific team or section the sponsor covers. Include the sponsor’s full trading name and Companies House number where one applies. Most grassroots netball clubs operate without a separate legal entity, so the agreement should name the chair or a named committee officer as the responsible party, with a note that the role passes to their successor by written agreement.

2. Sponsorship value and payment terms

State the figure, what it covers, and when payment is due. A full netball kit sponsorship through Kit Funder costs from £309 for a nine-player squad, covering match kit and bibs for the season. Confirm when the invoice is raised and confirm 5% is added on top for a local mental health charity donation rather than deducted from the kit spend.

3. Kit design and approval (dress, skort or top)

Netball kit is not one fixed format. Some squads play in a dress, others in a skort and top combination, and some clubs offer both across different age groups. Squads sometimes have warm up tops that may be State which format the sponsorship covers, where the sponsor's logo sits on each, and confirm the approval window, typically five working days from the design mockup, before production starts.

4. Season and match deliverables

List exactly what the sponsor receives: logo placement on match kit, a mention in match reports, a team photo in kit within four weeks of the season starting, a minimum number of social media mentions, and court-side signage if the tier includes it. A deliverable left off this list is one the club has not promised.

5. Sponsorship exclusivity and category

State whether the sponsor holds exclusive rights within its business category and whether this exclusivity covers the whole club or the sponsored team alone. A club running junior, Bee Netball and senior sides under one badge should be specific about which sides the exclusivity clause reaches.

6. Renewal and right of first refusal

Give the current sponsor a fixed window to renew before the club opens talks with anyone else. Most grassroots netball leagues start in September, so put the renewal decision in the diary for early summer, well before the season starts and kit ordering begins, rather than leaving it until the first fixture.

7. Exit terms and non-performance

Set out what happens if either side cannot see the arrangement through. If the club folds or merges, the sponsor’s business closes, an order isn’t produced, or an invoice goes unpaid. Thirty days' written notice, a refund for anything not yet produced, and the club retaining kit already delivered is the standard, proportionate approach at grassroots level.

8. Charity donation clause

State 5% of the invoice value is added on top and donated to a local mental health charity as standard on every Kit Funder arrangement. Naming this in writing gives both sides a clear line for their own reporting.

Netball-specific considerations

Most grassroots netball leagues run from September through to March or April, a longer season than football's and one crossing the coldest, wettest months of the year, worth noting where an agreement references outdoor courts and weather-affected fixtures. Confirm the club's England Netball affiliation is current, since county league entry and several funding routes sit behind it.

Netball kit tends to last several seasons rather than one, since match volume per player is lower than in a running-heavy sport like football. This changes the sponsorship conversation: a sponsor is often backing a kit lasting two or three seasons of visibility from a single order, worth stating plainly in the value section rather than leaving a sponsor to assume an annual reorder.

Junior netball and Bee Netball considerations

England Netball's Bee Netball programme introduces children aged five to eleven to the sport before they move into competitive age-group netball from under-12s upward. A club running Bee Netball sessions alongside its competitive teams should decide whether a sponsor's logo appears on Bee Netball bibs at all, since these sessions are about participation rather than competition, and some sponsors prefer their branding reserved for match-day kit further up the club.

A club with growing junior numbers has a specific, evidenced story to tell a sponsor. England Netball's own figures put the sport at around 3 million players a year in England, the most played female team sport in the country, backed by a five-year, £21.2m Sport England funding settlement behind national participation programmes including Bee Netball. A sponsor is backing a sport with a documented, well-funded pathway from a five-year-old's first session through to adult league netball, not a standalone team.

Sample netball sponsorship agreement structure

In practice, a grassroots netball sponsorship agreement covering the eight clauses above should run to two or three pages. Leave out indemnity clauses built for commercial contracts worth £50,000 or more, lengthy force majeure paragraphs, and jurisdiction wording beyond confirming UK jurisdiction applies. None of that adds real protection at grassroots level, only pages a volunteer committee has to read before anyone can sign.

The Kit Funder route: agreement handled through the platform

Kit Funder arrangements come with a standard sponsorship agreement built into the platform, agreed during the matching process itself rather than something either side drafts from a blank page. My Club Group takes on the kit design, whether that is a dress, skort or top across different age groups, along with production and delivery once terms are agreed so the club never needs to pay for legal advice to get a season's sponsorship in writing. Kit Funder matches clubs with sponsors at every scale, from a local independent backing one team to a regional or national brand backing a whole club, with the same agreement template behind each one.

Sponsorship in women’s sport looks different now, and netball has its own case to make. It is already the country’s most played female team sport. There is an engaged, regular and loyal audience, exactly what sponsors are now looking for, not just a name to put on a shirt.

Common questions about netball sponsorship agreements

Do grassroots netball clubs need a written sponsorship agreement?

Yes. A verbal arrangement relies on memory once the season ends and the people involved move on, and it gives neither side anything to point to if a dispute comes up. A short written agreement, even two or three pages, protects the club and the sponsor for the whole season.

How long should a netball sponsorship agreement run?

One season is the standard first term for the agreement itself, with an option to renew on the same terms. This is separate from how long the kit lasts, since netball kit is typically designed to last two or three seasons. Avoid locking a first-time sponsor into three seasons before either side has seen the arrangement work in practice.

What happens if a netball sponsor pulls out mid-season?

A standard exit clause gives thirty days' written notice, a refund for any kit not yet produced, and retention of kit already delivered to the club. Agree this in writing before the season starts in September, since negotiating it after a sponsor has already decided to leave gives the club less room to order replacement kit in time.

Can a netball club have more than one sponsor?

Yes, provided the exclusivity clause in each agreement is clear about which business category and which part of the club it covers. A kit sponsor and a separate court-signage sponsor commonly sit alongside each other without conflict, as long as both agreements state this in writing.

Does Kit Funder provide the sponsorship agreement?

Yes. Every Kit Funder arrangement includes a standard sponsorship agreement built into the platform, confirmed during the matching process. Neither the club nor the sponsor needs to draft their own contract or pay for legal advice to get the season's terms in writing.
